With
the launch of rival show Strictly Come Dancing 2013 last night, the X Factor
production team has to work hard to put together a more emotional,
talent-filled show. The Room returned, and boy are we glad, last Sunday’s arena
auditions left a lot to be desired!
The
show kicked off with 16-year-old Chloe in Manchester, who had just as much
enthusiasm and pep as the Euphoria Girls last week, except her rendition of
Miley Cyrus’ The Climb didn’t have me cringing in the same way. As with a lot
of the young hopefuls, it was clear just how much she wanted it and it was
touching to watch her reaction when she sailed through to Arena Auditions.
I’d
say this series of X Factor, it’s the Girls category that’s the category to
watch; I would even go as far as saying we’ve seen some of the best female
vocalists, only two audition shows in, and last night showcased even more
female talent! Another contender in this category who stood out last night was
likeable Brummie house keeper, Relley C with her Cruella Deville hair do, whose
acoustic version of Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child gave me
goosebumps. It’s always going to be a challenge turning one of the summer’s
most-played dance song into something to wow the judges with, so hats off to
her for managing to pull it off with her raw talent!
The
female talent continued with Abi Alton, already one of my favourties this
series! 18 year old supermarket worker Abi, brought along her roadie and
biggest fan, her dad, for support. She reminded me hopelessly of Zooey
Deschanel’s character Jess in New Girl, with her kooky, but sweet and bubbly
nature. With a soft vocal quality that’s different to the powerful voices we’ve
all become so used to in the audition process. Her original tone will ensure
anything she sings quickly becomes her own, I found myself listing off songs I
hope she’ll sing.
There
were also a few boys that shined through, none more so than Barclay Beales
who’s yodeling, yes, yodeling, prompted Nicole to start removing layers! This
may have become an over used sentence but, who knew yodeling could be so damn
hot?! Ryan Mathie also got four big yes’s from the judges and well as
introducing the term ‘Bin Juice’… he’s was funny and talented, in the words of
a young Louis Wash, he’s got the likeability factor.
We
were also treated to a montage of ‘Come Backs’. Jade Richards returned for her
3rd attempt, attempt one, she impressed the whole country with her
charm and her dedication, but didn’t make it past judges houses, attempt two
was a little underwhelming, but for attempt 3 she’s back with a new found
belief and sailed through to the arena. Melanie McCabe was back again for her 4th
go, and we’re so so glad she decided not to give up, her chillingly beautiful
rendition of Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ felt effortless and was delivered with
confidence, we’re definitely fans and so is Louis by the looks of it, was
a blubbering mess.
Amongst
the talented wannabes were the usual novelty acts thrown in by the production
team, tonight was no different with Thomas Feely, 54, whose monotone voice
almost reminded me of an older Gary Barlow but whose singing ability was awful.
The shock on the judges’ faces said it all, and I couldn’t help but feel bad
for him as they rejected him, but you should never ever kill a Stevie Wonder
classic! Also our thoughts go out to Patch The Cat.
