Review - FIFA 14 Demo

FIFA 14's official demo was released yesterday across all platforms to mass expectancy among football fans worldwide. With Lionel Messi joined on this year's cover by Real Madrid new boy Gareth Bale we take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of this year's version of the world's best football game.

First of all, the menu is brand new! With an all new layout the game looks much more new school compared to last year's regular listed options. It gives the game a newer feel straight away although most won't care about this at all.

Playable teams in the demo are; FC Barcelona, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, New York Red Bulls and Boca Juniors. A lot of the summer transfers haven't taken place yet on the game which is quite frustrating, but the matches are just 3 minutes a half so it's not too significant or annoying.

Gameplay is very different this year. The game is a lot slower, making technical players the bosses of this version rather than the blistering pace that has dominated previous versions. It seems a passing game is necessary, while AI defences are a lot more composed and defend more as a unit. As a whole, it's a lot harder to break down a defence. Passing is sharper and unless you adjust the settings, the power of the pass is set by you. Defending is different this year too seemingly. The standing tackle is less effective as the more technical players just waltz past you, so the slide tackle seems to be more useful. Referee's seem more willing to let the game go on too, meaning more physical encounters are also possible. Finishing is similar to last year, with finesse being more useful than in previous versions - but power still being key.

New celebrations are also about in this version. Lionel Messi's signature "point to the sky" is a new feature in the game, while Ronaldo's "bear" and "calm down" celebrations make a debut in the franchise. There are also some special celebrations such as the "Le Cirque Labelle" that will no doubt be used online a lot.

All in all, it's a good new version with a few differences but nothing major. The game will no doubt sell crazy numbers as it always does, but the game really isn't that much better than FIFA 13.

Rating: *** (3/5)
