Dancing On Ice is officially back, and it
certainly didn’t disappoint. If you hadn’t realised from the 600 mentions on
the show Sunday night it’s the last ever series, sad face, and to kick it off
half of the all star batch were back on the ice skating for your votes. The
series began introducing the celebs to “The Best Is Yet To Come’ perfectly apt.
It was quite strange not hiding behind our fingers when they all skated on, we
could sit back, relax, and enjoy this time around! The Silver Fox and the one
that isn’t Holly Willoughby did the standard pleasantries then it was time for
the duo’s to take to the ice…
Hayley & Dan
“Call Me Maybe”
The perfect pair to start the show, this was all
about opening with energy and a real sense of fun. As you’d expect from Hayley
the characterisation was evident and sustained from beginning to end. The feel
of the performance overtook the solo skating slightly but we can forgive that
this week. The impressive lifts more than made up for this and they always make you smile. Even though it
was a great number we felt that it was a bit of a safe skate, great, but lacked
a little wow, however with their chemistry and talent we know that’ll come.

Gareth & Brianne
“Patience”
Gareth Skates, there we said it, and we shall
never utter it again, you may have to get used to it on the live shows though.
Heavy on the cheese complete with countless boyband air grabs, at times the
partnership came across slightly wooden. That could simply be down to the fact
they’re a new pairing and hopefully the connection will develop week by week. Gareth
was very gentle and smooth across the ice showing off his confident basic
skating abilities. His solo skating was clean and Brianne, fearless as ever
gave the routine that much needed oomph throwing herself into the lifts. Jasons’
comments of Gareths’ posture ‘making him look older’ were more than confusing
so we won’t even attempt to make sense of them.

Bonnie & Andrei
“Too Darn Hot”
As we watched Bonnies’ opening VT we were just
uttering the words “once it pops out once, it’ll do it again”, then OUCH! Poor
Mark, not only is it a terrible shame for him personally but for the show too,
he’s a popular professional in viewers eyes and he’ll certainly be missed.
Bonnie found herself a not too shabby replacement in Andrei though. This
performance was all about the lifts! Each one showcasing Bonnies’ flexability
and lack of fear. The ‘too hot to mention’ lift at the end was just fantastic.
We’d love to see more solo skating from Bonnie in the weeks to come, although
we know how tempting it must be to cling onto Andrei and his reassuring
muscles. Perhaps slightly over-marked but a slick performance all the same.

Ray & Maria
“Best Song Ever”
Talent, talent, talent. It just oozes out of Ray
as he hits the ice. Back with his original partner the chemistry and connection
was evident from the moment the music kicked in. Guns out, chest pumped, the
adrenaline was flowing into a fast paced yet perfectly controlled performance.
Ray brought grace and masculinity to the ice with his lines and lifts and
showed his just as willing to be the first to try new tricks as he was last
time around. Brilliant first performance from one of the shows best ever
original partnerships. There’s no questioning his skills but with a huge amount
of pressure on his shoulders his ability to handle this could be the fine line
between 1st and 2nd place.

Jorgie & Sylvain
“I Love It”
Well, erm, we think awkward probably sums up this
pairing best. Personally we thought Jorgies’ JOKES in the VT were very funny,
it’d have just been odd if she hadn’t mentioned the elephant in the room.
Despite the obvious tension their performance fast and furious. Good solid
lifts with the graceful, elegant exits you came to expect from Jorgie last time
around. The judges commented that they were the duo with the most potential and
it’s a real shame we won’t get to see that pan out. We can’t help but feel
Jorgie was sabotaged slightly by producers on the hunt from some cheap drama
and headlines, just imagine if she’d been paired with Colin Ratushniak!

Joe & Robin
“Mission Impossible Theme”
He had us laughing before he even hit the ice
this time around, partly at his expense though, Robins’ accidental kick to Joe’s
face gave us our first ‘yikes’ of the series! The performance level and
characterisation was fantastic, a real joy to watch, and nothing less than we
expected. Appearing much steadier on his skates than last year and completing a
few steady lifts, yes he’s not the best skater in the world, or in panto, but
he’s definitely improved. It’s a shame this is the last series, just imagine
how good he’d be next year.

Kyran & Nina
“Sir Duke”
Powerful yet graceful. Solid and strong. As
expected the lifts were impressive and he flowed across the ice with confidence
and ease. Chemistry is already evident in his and Ninas’ partnership and this
will only improve as they progress further. The one thing we weren’t so keen on
was the speed, it felt as if they were almost performing in slow motion which
made some of the moves and tricks feel very placed and disjointed, that being
said it was still one of the best of the night, just imagine the scores if
there’d been more speed. We can’t wait to see what’s next from these two.

The Results
This week the leader board was irrelevant,
something we can’t help but this was a HUGE mistake, which didn’t make much
sense. With the scores from the judges having no influence on the vote it was
left solely down to popularity, this being the case a shock result was always
on the cards.
First to leave were Jorgie & Sylvain having
received the lowest amount of votes. There’s no other explanation for this than
the awkward partnership and negative twitter reaction. Jorgie was visibly upset
at the news and Sylvain showed not and ounce of compassion towards her, a real
shame to see. It’s never nice to watch someone with so much potential leave the
series so early.
Next came the skate-off between Bonnie &
Andrei and Joe & Robin, despite Joe resurrecting his infamous ‘flash’
performance it was not match for Bonnie and she sailed through to next week
(the week after) with a full house from the judges.
