The rise and rise of One Direction. Niall,
Liam, Zayn, Harry and Louis, never have five boys names been greeted with such
unrelenting hysteria, wherever they go, be it a local television studio or the
other side of the globe fans flock to their sides. As it stands the bands twitter account has amassed over 11
million followers and shows no signs of stopping, but it very nearly wasn’t a
reality…
In 2010 they all auditioned as solo artists
for the X Factor, navigating their way to bootcamp before being given the news
of rejection. Fortunately for millions of teenage girls one judge, a guest at
the time, Nicole ‘schamazing’ Scherzinger spotted potential for a combined
force and at judges houses One Direction were born.
After wowing audiences every weekend and
claiming third place the boys were soon snapped up by X Factor mentor Simon
Cowell and signed to his record label, Syco. The obligatory X Factor tour
followed and having sat through ‘the fillers’ One Direction graced the stage.
The arena sprung to life. Screaming girls. Embarrassing mums. All clambering to
get just that inch closer to the styled and preened soon to be idols.
A whirlwind two years flew by, One
Direction racked up sales of over 14 million singles, topping charts all over
the globe and breaking records for fun. Making cracking the notorious American
market look easy, the impact social media has had on their career is hard to
ignore. Having instant access to the world and such a personal online
relationship with their ‘Directioners’ they’ve quickly become an unstoppable
business empire. Having all the ingredients to please the most varied of
tastes, the cheeky one, the Irish one, the mature one, the broody one and the
‘generous with the love’ one they’re close to being a more testosterone driven
Spice Girls.
As 2013 kicks into gear the boys have the
world at their feet, it is their money making, fan building, career soaring
oyster. Two hit albums under their belts, sell out arena tours, a newly
announced stadium tour, two Brit awards and three MTV VMA’s you’d be forgiven
for thinking what else is there for Niall, Liam, Harry, Zayn and Louis left to
achieve? World domination? Why not!
