This week I went to the Vue cinema to watch the second
installment of the fantastic animated film Despicable Me 2.
After Despicable Me landed in 2010 and struck the hearts of many
children and adults alike a sequel didn't come as much of a surprise, and being
a huge fan of the first installment I was very excited to check out its follow
up. I couldn't wait to watch funny man Steve Carell transform into
much loved super villain Gru along with his army of yellow minion sidekicks.
The film tells the story of Gru disarming his villainy weapons
and talking a walk down the straight and narrow pathway towards building his
own Jelly and Jam business and turning into super dad for Agnes, Margo and
Edith. This is until his plans of normality are squashed, his partner
Doctor Nefario voiced by Russell Brand quits this new world of jelly and jam
testing, as he yearns to be bad, single father Gru begins to question his
quieter life and when founder of the Anti Villain league Silas Ramsbottom voiced
by Steve Coogan arrives on the scene armed with charismatic secret agent
Lucy Wilde with a plan. They need an insiders help into the world of master
villains and with Grus impressive history decide he is the perfect man for the
job much to his dismay. Along the way all is not as it seems and with Grus
attentions falling mainly on fatherhood and his overpowering attraction to
fellow agent Lucy, everything is at risk starting with his ever trusted
minions, and the root of all of his new found happiness is suddenly threatened.
With such high expectations I am glad to say I wasn't left
disappointed. The animation is the perfect choice for the upcoming school
holidays as it would be impossible for youngsters to dislike the mayhem which
is ensued in this film. The colour changing minions are the stars of this movie
just as they were first time round, effortlessly becoming the scene changes and
filling any gaps with comic relief. They certainly scored the lions share of
audience laughter and it's no doubt that their spin off film will be a huge
success if this is anything to go by.
Overall it's a thoroughly entertaining film which will
definitely keep anyone's little minions entertained and may even cause a few
parents to let out a few giggles. It has a lot of heart as far as an animated
movie goes and a storyline that is easy to work out, yet still very enjoyable
to follow. The only downside would have to be the villain choice I'm still not
convinced El Macho is a match for cookie loving Vector.
