Transfer
deadline day is, for many fans the most exciting day of the season and promises
to be special yet again this year with Bale and Rooney’s futures undecided and
with Harry Redknapp at QPR, it’s shaping up to be one of the best yet. This is
a list of my top 10 biggest signings that have happened on transfer deadline
day whether that be in the form of transfer fee, impact or just generally a
stellar signing.
10.
Marouane Fellaini to Everton from Standard Liege £15m 2008
This
was one of a few times that David Moyes decided to splash the cash at Everton
and what a transfer it has turned out to be with Fellaini proving to be a key
player for Everton and when they do decide to cash in they will no doubt make a
sizeable profit.
9. Andy
Carroll to Liverpool from Newcastle United £35m 2011
This
list would not be complete without this deal which in my opinion is the worse
deadline day transfer of all time. Liverpool paid a club record fee of £35
million to get Andy Carroll as a replacement for the departed Fernando Torres.
18 months and 11 goals later he was shipped out on loan to West Ham costing
Liverpool just over £3 Million a goal.
8.
Dimitar Berbatov to Man United from Tottenham £30.75m 2008
This
transfer was probably the most tense of any deadline day transfer with Man
United chasing Berbatov all summer and their arch rivals Man City making a last
ditch bid for the player, but in the final hours of the window Fergie got his
man and managed to get one over rivals Man City in the process.
7.
Ashley Cole to Chelsea from Arsenal £5m 2006
When
Ashley Cole finally joined Chelsea on deadline day in the summer of 2006 it
ended one of the longest running transfer sagas in history. With Cole being
nicknamed cashly at the time, as it was seen he had moved purely for the money,
but Ashley has had the last laugh winning everything to be won in club football
with Chelsea whilst Arsenal haven’t won anything since.
6.
Robinho to Man City from Real Madrid £32.5m 2008
This
transfer was the start of a new era for Man City as Robinho was their first
superstar signing of their new era. Beating Chelsea to the signature of
Robinho, for at the time a British transfer record showed some real intent by
City that they were ready to be a major player in the premier league.
5.
Fernando Torres to Chelsea from Liverpool £50m 2011
Fernando
Torres’s transfer to Chelsea is still the biggest in terms of transfer fee to
have ever happened on transfer deadline day but in terms of value for money its
one of the worse. Torres looked deadly every time he was on the ball at
Liverpool but as soon as he joined Chelsea he looked like a different player
and has never recovered always looking like a shadow of his former self was it
the pressure of the price tag?
4. Luis
Suarez to Liverpool from Ajax £22m 2011
This
transfer was massive in hindsight for Liverpool as what position would they be
in now without Suarez’s goals? It
was a great piece of business by Liverpool getting him for £22m, with his goal
scoring record of 51 goals in 96 appearances more than paying back his transfer
fee.
3.
Carlos Tevez to West Ham from Corinthians undisclosed fee 2006
By far
the most surprising and the biggest coup of any transfer deadline was the
transfer of both Tevez and Javier Mascharno to West Ham from Corinthians. This
transfer would not look out of place on football manager. All was not well
though as after an investigation West Ham were found guilty of breaching
premier league rules signing the pair and were fined £5.5 million. But Tevez
proved he was worth the trouble he had caused by scoring the winner against
Manchester United on the last day of the season keeping West Ham in the premier
league. Sheffield United got £18.1 million in compensation as they were
relegated, from West Ham and Tevez left after one season at the hammers.
2.
Wayne Rooney to Man United from Everton 25.6m 2004
The
transfer which had the biggest impact on this list is no doubt the Wayne Rooney
transfer to Man United in August 2004 on deadline day. His goals and presence
in the Man United side have made him one of their best players in their last
decade and no doubt have been a major factor in Man United’s success. Will he
be the subject of yet another deadline day move this summer?
1. Rafael Van Der Vaart to Tottenham from
Real Madrid 8m 2010
Having
Van Der Vaart as number one on this list compared to some of the other bigger
names may seem a surprise, but I believe this was the best deadline day transfer
of all time. Getting a player of genuine world class like Van Der Vaart for £8
million was a masterstroke by Harry Redknapp and the impact he had on Spurs was
that he transformed them from a top 10 side to champions league challenges with
his quality and his magic.
